2025 ACT Architecture Awards

Our Award Winning amenities charm Canberra’s new community in Denman Prospect.

We are thrilled to announce that our first interstate project, the Denman Village Prospect Amenities in Canberra has had an exciting sweep at the ACT Architecture Awards.

Awarded both the Cynthia Breheny Award for Small Project Architecture and the Social Impact Prize, Denman Village Prospect Amenities marks a continued expansion of public design excellence for Carter Williamson.

Also recently shortlisted in the 2025 Think Brick Awards Hornby Hunt Commercial Award, we are delighted to celebrate the amenities’ ongoing success.

The public toilets have been produced in collaboration with Capital Estate Developments and Spiire, as part of a recreational nucleus for Northwest Canberra's emerging suburb, Denman Prospect.

"The Denman Village Park Amenities demonstrate a generosity that we rarely see in built works of this nature, with joy, whimsey and robustness of thought evidenced in every element" - ACT AIA Jury.

The Denman Village Playground Amenities feature detailing typically not afforded to public bathrooms.

Bespoke detailing includes skylights, textured and rendered interior walls, playful steel windows, arched brick niches, spacious planning and attentive finishes.

Referential and charming, the toilet block takes cues from Canberra’s signature Clem Cummings bus stops.

The toilet block acts as a physical connection and safety point for residents and visitors, with soft illumination at night and a standout design. The striking forms sit harmoniously within the astronomy-themed park.

The cubicles are tucked inside a generous shaded canopy and designed larger than accessible industry guidelines, ensuring a comfortable and positive experience for all visitors.

The social and inviting hollows are welcoming and joyfully balance form and function.

The structures are built from honest, robust materials using a minimal palette of blue steel, frosted Perspex and detailed brickwork in various applications, to ensure the longevity of the amenity.

The forms introduce small moments of informal connection and interaction, placing community at the heart of public infrastructure.

Varied openings maintain an important connection to the unique Canberran landscape, framing the rolling hills, eucalypts and wattles.

When you gaze through the overhead oculus and windows, the blue steel provides a playful compliment to the modest brickwork and bright skies on a clear day.

"This project underscores the profound impact that highly considered architecture of even the smallest scale can have on public amenity and place making" - ACT AIA Jury.
