The Angophora SSDA Lodged

A site on the edge of history, changing for the future.

We are elated to share that the SSDA (State Significant Development Application) has been submitted for our dual apartment tower Design Excellence Competition Winning project The Angophora.

Illustrated by its title, The Angophora is heavily inspired by the sites surrounding landscape. An endemic tree, known for its salmon-pink toned bark and reaching branches that dot the sky with pockets of emerald green.

Guided by light, the building’s materiality gently moulds as the sun rises and falls, the pink-hued concrete shifting from light to dark.

Public art is an integral part of the proposed site, we are working in close collaboration with heritage and public art consultants Artefact to develop site-specific artwork strategies and commission contemporary First Nations artists to produce new work.

Drawing on the stunning Angophora tree around which the design unfurls, The Angophora’s material palette is rich, robust, and refined.

In collaboration with Land and Form, The Angophora features symbiotic towers connected by a publicly accessible podium, with two retail levels stacked beneath and a basement carpark resting underground.

The Anderson Street tower will stand proud at 33 storeys, with 155 residential dwellings tucked inside and private penthouse rooftop terraces crowning the tallest floors.

The second tower on McIntosh Street will boast 23 storeys with 103 residential dwellings, 56 of these have been designed as Infill Affordable Housing apartments.

The Angophora totalling at 24 one-bedroom, 106 two-bedroom, 120 three-bedroom and eight four-bedroom residences. The variety of homes are designed in anticipation of local community and future housing demands.

Soaring high between the towers, the proposed red gum anchors the project; becoming a living symbol and communal meeting point.

70% of the site area will include greenery, inclusive of podium landscaping and deep soil planting, counting for over 17% of the total site.

Raised timber decks float above a significant 3m setback, providing opportunity for the landscape and planting to flourish underneath and maintain a complete ecology.

During the middle of winter 82% of the apartments enjoy over two hours of direct sunlight, reducing demand for active heating.

83% of the Angophora’s apartments enjoy ample natural cross-ventilation.

With a focus on sustainable living, artistic expression, and a strong connection to nature, The Angophora is poised to become a landmark in the area.

The Angophora’s design is a building for its place, drawing inspiration from the surrounding landscape and offering modern, flexible living spaces.

The project enhances Chatswood’s evolution as a vibrant hub in Sydney's expanding metropolis, providing homes that adapt with their residents’ needs.

The Design Excellence Competition was coordinated by Mecone and endorsed by the NSW Government Architect and Willoughby Council.
